Carved Lacquer Owl Box

Early 20th c. Carved Lacquer Document Box. This style of lacquer is called Chōshitsu. This particular box closely resembles the work of Yōzei Tsuishu XX(1880-1952) and dates from about 1916-1926. A geometric pattern of carved gold lacquer sits below the raised black leaves. A red owl sits upon a branch within the tree. Owls are an auspicious symbol in Japan representing luck and protection from hardship.
