19th Century Meiji Period Japanese Lacquer Document Box (Ryoshibako).

9.5 x 7.5 x 2.75 inches.

The lid is decorated with a bundled harvest above a diamond-flower pattern called Hanabishi or Hishi. It is formed by the flowers of a water chestnut surrounded by the Shippo pattern representing harmony and the Seven Treasures of Buddhism. The interior tray shows three ducks by the water. Known to mate for life, ducks are symbolic of eternal love and devotion.
