Bronze Buddha Foot
Bronze Buddha Foot
13th - 15th Century Thai (Sukhothai Kingdom) Cast Bronze Foot of a Standing Buddha. 7” long.
This Thai bronze fragment is the left foot of a standing Buddha. Embracing Buddhist Theravada faith, culture and art from earlier traditions in Lanka, Bakan and Khmer, the sculpture of the Sukhothai Kingdom(1238-1438) soon evolved into a unique, creative style of its own. This "Golden Era" of Thai art is recognized by its simplified, elegant lines and stylized forms illustrating the lack of interest in the material world, symbolizing serenity and spirituality. The hint of a small flower is seen on top of the foot representing the traditional fragrant offering(puppha pūjā) with infinite virtues. “I worship the Buddha with these flowers; May this virtue be helpful for my emancipation; Just as these flowers fade, Our body will undergo decay.
